Ultrasound imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography, is a way to take images from inside the human body through the use of high-frequency sound waves. The reflected sound wave echoes are recorded and displayed as a real-time visual image.

Ultrasound is a useful way of examining many of the body’s internal organs, including but not limited to the heart, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys and bladder. Because ultrasound images are captured in real time, they can show movement of internal tissues and organs and enable physicians to see blood flow and heart valve functions.

Ultrasound services at ECA HealthLink include:

  • Comprehensive breast imaging
  • Abdominal
  • Interventional
  • Musculoskeletal (MSK)
  • Obstetrical
  • Gynecological
  • Vascular services
  • Intracavity imaging

Most patients will be able to stay in their clothes and uncover the area to be scanned. Some patients will need to change into a hospital gown.

You will be called into the exam room and be asked to lie on the exam table. Gel is put on the skin and a transducer (or probe) is moved over the area.

This device sends sound waves into the body and the returning sound waves make a picture of your organ or structures on the video screen.
